Lawrence County High School “Big Gold Machine,” has finished its 2017 marching season
The field show, Shades of Black, included the following musical selections: “Paint it Black”, “Blackbird” (arranged by Assistant Band Director, Mr. Lane Toney,) and “Black Magic Woman.”
This year, the band performed at three area marching competitions. At the Columbia Invitational Marching Competition, the Band placed 3rd in class AA, and the percussion section placed 1st in class AA.
At the Tennessee Valley Invitational held at Muscle Shoals High School, the Band received a Superior rating in class AA.
The color guard garnered its own Superior Rating and was named “Best in Class” for class AA.
This past weekend, the band completed its competitive season at the Pulaski Classic hosted by the Giles County Band Backers. In true Big Gold Machine fashion, the students delivered their best performance of the year.
As a result, the Band placed 1st in Class D and received a Superior rating.
The Drum Major, Anna Eledge, placed 1st in the class and earned a Superior rating, as well.
The percussion section placed 2nd in class D.
The color guard, instructed by Kenneth Coultas, received a Superior rating, placed 1st in class D, and was named Grand Champion Color Guard for the 2017 Pulaski Classic.
Band Director, Troy Morris had this to say about the season:
“We were in a rough place at the start of this season. By the time we actually began day one of camp, we were essentially two weeks behind. Mr. Lane Toney, and Mr. Coultas got straight to work designing the show concept and drill for the band to perform. I am honored to be a part of such a wonderful staff. Any time there is a new director, there are a lot of complications and adjustments that have to be made. The kids, the staff, the LCHS Music Boosters, and the Lawrenceburg community have responded admirably. I am very proud of the way the season has turned out. I look forward to seeing what the rest of the year holds for the Big Gold Machine. I’m here for the long haul and look forward to getting back to the roots of what made this band great for so many years.”
Mr. Morris, an alumni of Lawrence County High School, graduated in 2002, and was also a four year member of the trombone section of the Big Gold Machine.
